In the midst of one of the most chaotic financial periods in decades, the McIntire School of Commerce and the Darden Graduate School of Business have teamed up to host the University of Virginia’s inaugural Value Investing Conference. The conference, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held Nov. 6 and 7 at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Charlottesville and at Darden’s Abbott Center Auditorium, respectively.

“The Value Investing Conference provides an outstanding opportunity for professional investors, members of the investing public, and students to meet annually and learn about best practices and current trends in value investing,” says event organizer David C. Smith, Professor of Finance at the McIntire School and head of McIntire’s Center for Financial Innovation. “It also serves to open up the practical world of value investing—pioneered by Benjamin Graham and practiced with tremendous success by Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett—to the academic world.” Smith notes that value investing has so far received little attention from the academic community.

The Value Investing Conference will feature nearly a dozen presentations and panel discussions with 25 outstanding members of the investment community, including Chris Brightman, Chief Executive Officer of UVIMCO; John Griffin (McIntire ’85), Founder and Trustee of Blue Ridge Capital; John Macfarlane (Darden ’79), Chief Operating Officer of Tudor Investment Corporation; and Donald M. Wilkinson (Darden ’66), Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Wilkinson O’Grady. The event will also feature a speech and question-and-answer session with Alice Schroeder, author of The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life.
