McIntire’s 2001 spring symposium, “Creating and Sustaining Visionary Organizations,” focused on sustained corporate greatness, or visionary firms. The symposium built its foundation around a keynote presentation by Jim Collins, noted management educator, researcher, and author. In Built to Last (HarperBusiness, 1994), Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras describe a six-year research project that opened a window on visionary firms. These findings and the recent completion of Collins’ latest work, Good to Great (HarperBusiness, 2001), form the basis for this presentation. Two related panels explored
industry-specific and structural
factors impacting corporate greatness. They discussed the topic of CEOs, assessing the transferability of Collins’ findings to
the highly competitive and cyclical segments comprising the real estate
industry. After this industry case study, the panels explored the barriers to
sustained greatness inherent in certain corporate structures. Closing
remarks by McIntire Dean Carl P. Zeithaml concluded the symposium.
